Nutrition and Nourishment was the talk I presented at the Calgary VegFest 2026. In addition to educating folks on how to eat more plants, we also honed in on the differences between nutrition and nourishment. I can totally see how these two words may be used interchangeably, but I believe there is an essential distinction here. A distinction that can help you reframe how you look at your health and approach your health goals.

Nutrition is scientific. It relates to biological processes involving consumption, absorption, and utilization of nutrients that support your growth, health, and metabolic function. All the talk about macros and micros, calories, hydration, preventing deficiency, reducing disease risk, and more falls under nutrition. As you know, these are essential topics for better health, improved quality of life, and longevity.

So, what then, is nourishment? Nourishment, not unlike nutrition, encompasses what you need for your health, growth, and development. It goes beyond food, however. Beyond numbers, analytics, and quantification. Nourishment  focuses on the whole person and comes from a holistic perspective. Nourish is a verb which may involve the act of nourishing or finding oneself in a state of being nourished. This involves your mental fitness and emotional well-being. Nourishment is receiving what your body, mind, and soul need to flourish.

Why does this distinction matter? Nourishment helps you zoom out and consider yourself as the whole person and human being you are, rather than a calorie-consuming-calorie-burning machine (which scientifically, yes, you also are). This allows you to bridge the gap between physical health and positive psychology.

I would invite you to consider shifting your focus from nutrition to nourishment. Both are important and both serve different purposes, while retaining meaningful overlap and alignment with one another. But nutrition and data, especially today, seem to be where focus gravitates when people take health into their own hands. Nourishment takes more of a back seat, and honestly, is hardly ever in the car at all.

Beginning with nutrition makes it seem as if your body is an equation to be solved or a problem that needs an answer. Beginning with nourishment naturally honours your self-worth. Self-worth is internal, inherent, and unconditional. Your self-worth means you do not have to “earn” a good meal because you did a hard workout. It means you do not have to experience self-inflicted punishment because you ate ice cream or a piece of pie. The act of nourishing is the act of acknowledging you are enough, exactly as you are, and that you are choosing to care for your body, mind, and soul, for the sole reason that you deserve to flourish.

If you look closer, you may start to see how nourishment becomes an act of steady self-compassion. Let’s take a look at your self-talk together. How do you speak to yourself when your daily health habits do not go as planned? Are your words filled with judgement, harshness, self-inflicted pressure, and rigid tracking? Or are you speaking to yourself kindly, with understanding, support, and love?

Choosing to nourish yourself is how you treat yourself with the very same love, care, kindness, and empathy that we freely give to others. Whether it is eating a balanced, whole-food, plant-predominant meal, or choosing restorative rest, or taking a break from a food scale or calorie counting app, or celebrating doing 5 minutes of walking rather than beating yourself up for not doing 30 minutes. Nourishment and that act of nourishing and state of being nourished may take many forms. Generally, all forms of nourishment tend to be cup-filling and positive.

Anchoring your health and journey to nourishment gives you a great shot at lasting results and success. Fueled by self-compassion, any friction you experience with habits begins to melt away and you may indeed stop chasing perfection and start celebrating progress. This is why nutrition, though crucial, cannot be the be all, end all.

How do you put this into practice?

Whenever you next find yourself looking to optimize your nutrition, or considering a diet, or thinking about health through the nutrition lens, pause. Consider how and where your nourishment fits into your health and your decision(s).

You can still optimize your nutrition and understand calories and make healthier food choices, while enhancing your emotional well-being, prioritizing your mental health, and nourishing your whole self.

As always, chase progress, not perfection.

I believe in you,

The Bottom Line

Nutrition or Nourishment? Nutrition is scientific and relates to the biological process(es) involving consumption, absorption, and utilization of nutrients that support your growth, health, and metabolic function. This includes calories, macros/micros, deficiency, disease risk, and more. This is essential for your health, no doubt about it. Nourishment goes beyond food and numbers, is whole-person focused, and involves your mental fitness and emotional well-being. Nourishment is receiving what your body, mind, and soul need to flourish. Consider focusing more on nourishment rather than on nutrition. Nourishment honours your self-worth and helps you leverage self-compassion to your advantage. This then extends to your self-talk, where you may start to speak to yourself kindly and with the same love and compassion you give others, rather than putting pressure on yourself and judging yourself harshly. You can still optimize your nutrition and understand calories and make healthier food choices, while enhancing your emotional well-being, prioritizing your mental health, and nourishing your whole self.
